How to Crochet a Unicorn Beanie in Any Size

Free crochet pattern and video tutorial by But First, Crochet: Crochet Beanie, Crochet Hat, Crochet for Kids and Baby

My girls love unicorns, heck, I love unicorns! I was inspired by a knit unicorn hat and thought this needs to be available for crocheters so "The Unicorn Beanie" was born.

This pattern was originally introduced as an ETSY pdf pattern in 2019 and has been one of if not But First Crochet's bestselling pattern! I wanted this gem to be available to anyone with a hook and some yarn so I hope you make a few and gain some smiles from some happy little girls.

You can get so creative with color combos and even yarn weights because if you have a tape measure than the options are limitless.

If you love this pattern, consider purchasing the printable PDF for the price of my favorite coffee order (Starbucks Venti Vanilla Sweet Cream Coldbrew) and I will be so grateful for the inspiration to keep the content flowing.

Materials

You'll need a few basic materials to make a crocheted unicorn beanie.

  • First let's talk hooks. You will need and H (5.0) and I (5.5) Hook. My favorite hooks are "Clover Amour"

  • Next, worsted medium (4) weight yarn. I used “I Love This Yarn” in “Rosy Cheeks” and “Linen” in the photo above but feel free to get creative with color combos for the brim, bow, horn, and body.

  • Stitch Marker (I like using small safety pins)

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle

  • Measuring Tape

  • Small amount of stuffing/fiber fil (OPTIONAL)

Hat Sizing Table

It is so important to measure your brim and hat height in order to achieve the desired size.

Brim

w/ H hook

  1. Ch 8 (0-12mos) Ch 9 (toddler-child), or Ch 10 (teen-adult) SC in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across.

  2. Ch 1. Turn. Sc in BLO of each st.

  3. Repeat row 2 until desired length is reached. See chart above for Brim length.

  4. Bring ends together and sl st closed. Ch 1. Flip Brim so seam is on the inside.

Hat

w/ I hook

Rnd 1: Sc an even number around the brim (appox 42, 48, 54, 54, 60 sts depending on size). Sl st in 1st st to join.

  • You can adjust this number slightly as long as you end with an even number of sts.

  • The number of sts should be the same or slightly more than the number of brim rows.

Rnd 2: Do not chain 1. SC in next stitch. Place stitch marker in this stitch. Dc in the same st. Skip 1 st. [Sc, Dc in the next st. Skip 1 st] repeat [ ] around. Do not join.

Rnd 3: Sc, Dc in marked st. Skip 1 st (you will be skipping all the DC’s until decrease rounds). [Sc, Dc in the next st. Skip 1 st] repeat [ ] around. You will skip the last Dc.

Repeat rnd 3. Until hat height reaches (approx 3.5 in., 4.5 in., 5.25in, etc. see chart above for sizing ).

Notes on decreasing:

  • The number of stitches at the end of decrease rounds varies depending on the number of stitches you began with. It’s okay! Simply follow italicised instructions.

  • You will not always insert into a SC for griddle stitches.

  • You will not always be skipping DC’s in decrease rounds.
